Grove Road, New Southgate. Terrace of houses

This terrace of houses ran along the north side of Grove Road, New Southgate. They were demolished in the 1970s when the area was re-developed. The car park of an old people's home is now on this site. Their claim to fame is that the second door from the left, (no.8), was where Arthur Drew was born in 1888. When he joined the army in 1914 he changed his name to Allastair McReady-Diarmid and in 1917 was awarded a Victoria Cross posthumously. An engraved memorial stone and plaque was unveiled in a ceremony on 1st December 2017 on the Grove Road Open Space, which was 100 years to the day after the actions which resulted in this award.
