I've acquired a small number of photos from, I think, the 1880's. Caption to this reads "Old cottage opp. St. John's Church". It is shown on an old O.S. map (Godfrey Ed. of 1898). It's pretty dilapidated here, but I wonder if it predates both the church (1889) and the grammar school (1884)? Any comments greatly appreciated.

It looks Gothick revival to me, so about 1800

Wonder if it was an old toll house?

I think this is "The Cottage" shown in Kelly 1892 occupied by Thos Carter. Typical Victorian Gothick. The roof is of slate which would have come on the railway, so not earlier than about 1850.

Thanks everyone for your input on this picture. I understand there was a temporary structure on the site of the school, serving as both school and church, could this be it do you think? Bob
