Finchley Memorial HospitalThis is Leicester Homan JP 1865-1948, son of Ebenezer and Joana Homan. They lived in Friern Barnet in a house called Friern Watch.
Ebenezer funded the building of Finchley Memorial Hospital and, I understand, a hospital in Lyme Regis.
L H went to live in the Isle of Man in 1908, building a large house Ballaterseon manor in Ballaugh. He became a JP.
During the first World War he volunteered as an interpreter at the Knockaloe Internment Camp. It housed several thousand German internees.
This portrait was painted by Schmitt and internee and artist in Sept 1917.
Known locally for his generosity, he left a considerable sum to both island hospitals. This painting was found by me in a torn and dilapitated condition in in a skip by me at the Ramsey Cottage Hospital.I donated it to the Manx museum with a contrituion towards its restorationLater this year a copy will be presented to the hospital in recognition of his generosity.
