I used to walk from New Southgate to Totteridge station in the summer of 1976 so I could travel on the 1938 tube stock that was still running on the Northern line at that time. They had a very distinctive burning smell, really noticeable at Finchley Central where I used to sit and watch them for ages. Great times.
