The Friern Barnet Photo Archive
New Coronation Cinema, High Road, New Southgate

The cinema opened in 1930, and was a popular venue until it closed in 1952. This is the only photo I have of the cinema building, taken just before demolition in 1970. If anyone has a better one, or any taken when it was open, I would be pleased to see them (Colin Barratt Collection)

The cinema closed on the 25th. of March 1953, in respect of the passing of Queen Mary the Queen Mother the previous evening, and never re-opened.

I believe this building later became offices for the Eastern Gas Board. I was working for them and remember visiting the office about 1970/71. Demolition may have been a year or so later?

This was a depot and offices for Eastern Gas, my Mum worked there as a wages clerk. It was handy because we lived just across the road at 32 Upper Park Road!

My dad used to go to this cinema back when the pictures were "silent movies". He used to tell us stories of all the characters who used to work there, such as the musicians and the regular clientele.
